Clifford C. Hays, 82, of Virden died at 4:41 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at his residence.

He was born Nov. 16, 1918, in Girard, the son of Cephas and Ruth Haegler Hays. He married Betty J. Stewart in Girard. He was preceded in death by a brother, Don Hays; and a sister, Pauline Hays.

Mr. Hays was a 1936 graduate of Girard High School. He was emloyed [sic] as a corporation specialist for the state of Illinois, retiring in 1989 after 24 years of service. He also farmed in the Virden area for many years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Virden, Girard Masonic Lodge #151 AF&AM, Macoupin County Farm Bureau, a 4-H leader for many years, a former vice president and board member of Macoupin County Services Co., and a former justice of the peace and county judge. Mr. Hays was a Democratic precinct comitteemen [sic] for many years and a former master of ceremonies for many area groups and vocalist for different occasions.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at First United Methodist Church in Virden with the Rev. Ted A. Hartley officiating.

Burial was in Union Chapel Cemetery in Girard.

Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden was in charge of arrangements.

Surviving are his wife; five sons and daughters-in-law, Gary L. and Sharon K. Hays and Larry L. and Kandice K. Hays, all of Girard, Don L. and Patti A. Hays of Standard City, and Ron L. and Deanna M. Hays and Randy L. and Robyn S. Hays, all of Virden; two daughters and a son-in-law, Connie L. Delich of Virden and Brenda S. and Albert S. Crider of Springfield; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine and Roscoe Pitchford of Girard; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
