GIRARD-- Melvin L. Hays, 82, of Girard died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1923, in North Otter Township, the son of Lloyd M. and Eva M. Wallace Hays. He married H. Janet Fanning in 1948 in Carlinville. A daughter, Dena Marie Hays, preceded him in death.

Mr. Hays was a farmer. He was a member of Nilwood Baptist Church, Macoupin County Historical Society in Carlinville, Macoupin Agriculture Antique Association in Carlinville, Macoupin County Farm Bureau and the Union Chapel Cemetery board in Girard.

Survivors: wife, H. Janet; son, Darrell M. Hays (companion, Cheri Gunn) of Girard; two daughters, Donna J. (husband, Lowell) McNeely of Modesto and Diane J. (husband, James) Tisckos of Springfield; five grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond L. (wife, Ethelene) Hays of Girard and Lester M. (wife, Helen) Hays of Erica, Okla.; two sisters, Maxine F. Keltner of Waverly and Emeline (husband, Ray) Batchelder of Illiopolis; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Girard, the Revs. Lee Rule and William Dean officiating. Burial: Union Chapel Cemetery, Girard.
