Thomas L. HAYS

Thomas L. Hays, 52, of Blythe, Calif., formerly of Girard and Morrisonville, died Sunday, June 4, 1995, at his residence.

He was born March 3, 1943 in Springfield, the son of Harold Coe and Lena Mae Scott Hays. He married Karen Berns [sic] in February, 1990. Preceding in death were his father, Harold, and a brother, Robert Hays.

Mr. Hays was a 1961 Girard High School graduate where he achieved all-conference and all state honors in football and all-conference honors in basketball. He received a bachelor of science degree from McKendree College, Lebanon, and later taught science and coached basketball in the Morrisonville school system. He returned to teaching and coaching in 1985 at Palos Verde High school in Blythe, Calif. His record of 41 wins and 7 losses led to his selection of 1990 Southern California Basketball Coach of The Year. His hobbies included playing golf, cards and investing in the stock market.

Surviving are his wife, Karen; three sons, Thomas and Christopher Hays, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jordon Hays of Blythe, Calif.; his mother, Lena M. "Scottie" Hays of Girard; a brother, Richard Hays of Lebanon; an uncle and aunt, Elmore and Adele Hays of Virden; a nephew, Scott Hays of Lexington, Ky.; and a cousin, Janelle Bednara of Missouri.

Services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Blythe. Memorial services in Girard will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 12, at the United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Union Chapel cemetery, rural Girard, Rev. Dean Austin officiating. Organist is Mary Crawford.

Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Girard is in charge of local arrangements.
